Best places to stay

Santiago de Compostela

Ría de Muros y Noia

Santiago prides itself as being one of the most hospitable cities in Europe. There is an enormous selection of hotels and Paradors (Inns) to choose from which cater for every type of budget. We’ve selected the best, based on quality, comfort, value, style and location.

Porta da Pena 17. Ph: (+34) 981 569 530.

We love the location of this hotel, five minutes from the cathedral and situated on a quiet old Santiago street.  It is one of the best budget hotels in town and has a beautiful walled garden that makes a perfect place for their acclaimed breakfast and early evening drinks: Great value, beautifully hosted and wonderful views.

The Pousadas Group have four hotels in close proximity to the centre of town, they range from the budget two star Hotel Airas Nunes to the four star Virxe de Cerca. Handy if you turn up unannounced, as they are more than likely to find you some space in one of their hotels.

Hotel Airas Nunes** Rúa do Vilar 17. Is a comfortable budget hotel which has you sleeping in the heart of the city on one of its famous old arcaded-streets; Rua do Vilar, just one hundred meters from the cathedral itself. Some rooms have great views of the cathedral and the red roofed city: Very popular in the summer months with pilgrims, so book early.

Hotel Pombal *** Rúa do Pombal 12. A small but well reviewed hotel with larger rooms than its sister Airas Nunes:  The location offers up stunning views of the cathedral from a distance, especially at night and easy access to the city and the delightful nearby gardens of The Alameda.

Hotel San Clemente ** San Clemente, 28. Another low budget hotel a short walk from the old centre but with easy access to the cathedral, the old town and the gardens. Pleasantly restored to a comfortable standard.

Hotel Virxe da Cerca **** Virxe de Cerca 27. A restored Manor House on the east side of town next to the old medieval quarter completes this quartet of hotels with four star hospitality and comfort. It has great access to the narrow streets of the old town, a private garden, a conservatory and pleasant views across Belvis Park.

C/Bonaval, 2-4. Ph: (+34) 981 558 883 www.hotelbonaval.com

Located next to Bonaval park on the north east side of town, this nicely restored hotel offers up comfortable and spacious rooms with great alternative views of the city and the cathedral’s towers. It has an excellent and very popular restaurant within its grounds and a pleasant outdoor space for enjoying breakfast and dinners.

Campillo San Francisco.  Ph: (+34) 981 581 634  www.sanfranciscohm.com

This wonderfully restored monastery which dates back to the year 1214 has truly earned its four star status.  Though it now functions as a hotel, it has retained the charm, aesthetic pleasures and grandness of its historical past and resides just a few hundred meters from the cathedral. It has an indoor swimming pool, a grand old dining hall and an outside courtyard where you can enjoy the endeavors of their excellent traditional restaurant.

Avenida Burgo das Nacions.

Ph: (+34) 981 558 070. www.nh-hotels.es

Situated some 10 minutes walking distance to the north of the city and in the University district is this very contemporary hotel. The hard strong lines of its concrete exterior hide the chic design and modern comfort of this five star facility. Sumptuous suites, indoor and outdoor pools, Turkish baths and spa facilities tick all the five star boxes.

Rúa dos Loureiros, 12. Ph: (+34) 981 554 712 www.altairhotel.net

A delightful find: This ‘boutique’- styled hotel sits on the quiet north side of town but it is just 5 minutes from the centre. It only has 11 rooms but they have been beautifully designed in sympathy with the buildings antique heritage.  Altair epitomises the best in design - when the old meets the new. Contemporary fixtures and fittings mix seamlessly with the old stone walls throughout the building creating a very warm and hospitable ambience.

Paseo da Amaia 23b. Urbanización Brandia. Vidán. Ph: (+34) 981 534 636  www.aquintadaauga.com

Turning up the ‘style-ometer’ is this newly restored paper factory, which sits harmoniously in a countryside setting just 3km’s from the centre of town: Some 45 rooms have been lavishly and individually decorated by the owners who have strived to make this a modern, stylish, eco-friendly development. Throw in the indoor swimming pool, the available spa treatments, the attention to detail and the calming sound of the river Sar that encircles the property and you have the perfect rejuvenating getaway.

Oblatas s/n. Ph: (+34) 981 552 444

Another luxury hotel stemming from the restoration of a significant religious building: The former convent of Carmen sits at the bottom of the steep hill that leads to the cathedral. It now hosts contemporary five star facilities for those who enjoy the ultimate form of indulgence. Stylish spacious rooms, top quality chefs and a pleasant relaxing ambience make it a great place to unwind and relax in after a hard day exploring the city.

Algalia de Arriba 5. Ph: (+34) 981 558 111

An old house in the old part of town that has been converted into a simple yet charming hotel: Its minimalist style is comfortable and clean and allows the strength of the original stonewalled architecture to shine through. Great value and right in the heart of the old quarter.

Rúa Virxe da Cerca, 7. Ph: (+34) 981 568 923 www.atafonadoperegrino.com

Formerly a bakery this old building has been tastefully restored to provide comfortable modern accommodation in a great location. Abastos market and Belvis park are just around the corner and there are plenty of nearby bars and restaurants. A Tafona the “new cuisine” restaurant is next door.
